Ensuring reliable and affordable energy for PowerSouth's members

PROPOSED ENERGY POLICY HAS THE POTENTIAL TO DRAMATICALLY INCREASE ENERGY COSTS FOR CONsumers

Energy policy continues to be a controversial topic – from environmental factors to costs for consumers. The debate is ongoing, and there are numerous proposed regulations that will have a tremendous impact on electricity generation and cost. Environmental regulations aimed toward air emissions, ash ponds, ash landfills, coal mining, water intake and water discharge and other aspects of power generation have been proposed.

If enacted, one or more of these regulations are likely to have adverse consequences on the availability and cost of energy for consumers within PowerSouth’s service territory. Taken together, these rules may increase burden and costs of coal units such that their use is dramatically decreased or stopped altogether.

Consumers in Alabama and northwest Florida will ultimately bear the brunt of the cost of environmental constraints on electricity generation, adding an immense financial burden to an already-weakened economy. PowerSouth encourages lawmakers to consider compliance costs and the impact on end-use consumers and the economy. It is critical that we take a close look at how regulations will impact energy reliability and costs.

PowerSouth is tracking a number of regulatory initiatives that are likely to impact coal generation. Follow the links below for more information.

In an effort to bring national energy policy into focus, the Partnership for Affordable Clean Energy (PACE) recently launched an original documentary entitled Unplugged: Reconnecting American Energy Policy With Reality.

The documentary, shot at locations across the U.S., features the perspectives of consumers, federal legislators, business leaders, energy experts, and environmentalists who are often overlooked by mainstream media coverage of energy issues. PowerSouth employees Nick Grana, Lowman Maintenance Scheduler, and Calvin Davenport, Lowman Utility Technician, are featured in the video.
