ANDALUSIA, ALA. – The 35th Annual Co-op Couples Conference offered Central Generation Secretary Connie Lawrence and her husband, Matt, the opportunity to learn more about the cooperative way of life in a fun, relaxed environment.
Sponsored by PowerSouth, the Lawrences spent July 26-28 at the Hilton Beachfront Garden Inn in Orange Beach, Ala., with 27 other couples from around the state.
“Matt and I sincerely enjoyed our time with everyone from the different cooperatives,” Lawrence said. “We tend to get so caught up in the cooperatives we are currently part of or do business with that we forget about how many other types exist and are ready to serve us in so many capacities.”
Lawrence said they learned a great deal about how dairy, farmer, financial and electric cooperatives across the state operate.
“We addressed the questions and concerns that many of the couples had, therefore gathering a better understanding of the industry as a whole,” she said. “Randy Brannon, General Manager of Pea River EC, did an excellent job answering questions about the issues electric cooperatives are facing, such as rising rates and energy efficiency.”
Outside of the planned sessions, couples enjoyed free time to explore the area and relax away from work and their normal routines.
“My husband works out of town three weeks at a time, so this opportunity was an excellent chance to reconnect away from home and the responsibilities that go with that,” Lawrence said. “I cannot thank PowerSouth enough for sponsoring me, and I definitely encourage other couples to attend the conference. I know they will certainly learn a lot and enjoy themselves.”
