ANDALUSIA, ALA. – Henry Ott, PowerSouth’s Plant Lowman Manager, will retire Oct. 2 after 32 years of service.
Ott, who has served as Plant Manager for the last 13 years, began his career with PowerSouth in 1977 as Personnel Coordinator. He hired much of the plant’s original staff and said he will miss all of the hard-working people he has been able to work with.
“I’ve loved having the opportunity to watch people grow and mature over the years,” Ott said.
In addition to seeing his fellow employees change over time, Ott has also seen remarkable changes in the plant itself.
“There have been a lot of technological advancements, and the plant has grown tremendously,” Ott said. “We’ve added a lot of equipment over the last 12 or 13 years, as well as made upgrades. Of course, the process of making electricity has also become a lot more complex. There are a lot more environmental regulations now than there were then.”
Upon his retirement, Ott will pass the torch to Plant Services Superintendent, David Powell.
Powell also began his career with PowerSouth in 1977. He was originally hired on the start-up crew as a chemist on Units 2 and 3, but has worked in several departments over the last 32 years.
“I feel very fortunate to have worked with two previous plant managers as well as a seasoned and dedicated staff,” Powell said. “Coming into this new position, I’ll have the strength of a veteran staff that I know I can depend on. It should be a smooth transition.”
Ott said he always encouraged his coworkers to embrace change and practice humility in all aspects of their life.
“And always remember that success should be synonymous with happiness,” he said. “What you pursue in life will determine how happy you are, so be sure to pursue something real and well-founded.”
Ott said he is looking forward to having more free time to spend with his wife, who shares his love for hunting and gardening.
PowerSouth management and staff wish Ott the best of luck as he settles into his retirement.
“Henry has been a valuable leader at the Lowman plant,” said PowerSouth Vice President of Power Supply, Damon Morgan. “His presence at the plant will be missed, but the principles he taught will continue to impact all of us.”
