ANDALUSIA, ALA. — PowerSouth employees reached a full year March 6 with no lost-time accidents. In honor of this safety milestone, Headquarters employees were treated to a luncheon on May 13.

This milestone signified a total of more than 1.1 million safe working hours by PowerSouth’s 564 full-time employees. This is only the second time in company’s history to reach a full year without a lost-time accident. The first milestone was reached in 2004.

Many PowerSouth employees often work under extreme conditions, such as plant workers and linemen who routinely work around live electricity. These circumstances illustrate the dedication needed to achieve such an impressive milestone.

PowerSouth employees demonstrate a superior level of safety,” said Buddy Manring, PowerSouth Safety Supervisor. “Reaching a year without a lost-time accident proves employees’ commitment to one another’s safety, and they deserve much praise for accomplishing this feat.”

The achievement, which was reached at 12:01 a.m. on March 6, is an important one for PowerSouth, as accidents affect insurance and workers compensation rates, as well as productivity and overall cost.

Going a full year without a lost-time accident allowed PowerSouth to save more than $28,000 in 2008.

Robert Folk, Loss Prevention Technical Consultant of Wausau Insurance Company, was present at the luncheon to present PowerSouth President and CEO Gary Smith with a plaque to commemorate the occasion.

Folk noted in his presentation that PowerSouth’s safety ratings have seen a tremendous increase since 2000. He added that the current ratings were 50 percent better than the industry average and that PowerSouth sets a good example for other companies to follow.

“Management really makes safety a priority,” said Folk. “I wish every account was as easy as this one.”

“This is PowerSouth’s award, not mine,” Smith said upon accepting the plaque. “It belongs to all of you who work hard every day to insure one another’s safety.”

At the conclusion of the luncheon, Smith challenge employees to reach a full calendar year without a time-lost accident.
