ANDALUSIA, ALA. – Four PowerSouth employees traveled to Washington, D.C., in May to support PowerSouth’s efforts at the 2010 Legislative Conference. Theyjoined 2,500 other representatives to help boost rural cooperatives’ legislative positions on several fronts.
Billy Barnes, Central Generation IC&E Technician; Steve Griffin, Plant Lowman Heavy Equipment Operator; James Long, Plant Lowman Storekeeper; and Carol Page, Buyer, were selected as delegates at the annual Action Committee for Rural Electrification (ACRE) luncheons in the fall.
As a result of the cooperative representatives’ efforts at the conference, Sen. Grassley (R-IA) sent a letter to support maintaining Rural Utilities Service (RUS) electric loan levels at $6.5 billion, and many other members of Congress committed to help oppose restriction on RUS lending and maintain loan levels.
During their free time, Barnes, Griffin, Long and Page were able to enjoy touring the nation’s capitol with their families.
“The trip was absolutely fantastic,” Page said. “We enjoyed seeing all of the monuments and memorials. It was an incredible experience that we will never forget.”
“My favorite thing was the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier,” Barnes said. “Arlington was extremely impressive.”
Long said he could hardly describe the trip with words. “It was wonderful. I was able to see things I’ve never seen before and I’m very grateful for the experience.”
The trip winners also attended a Senate Appreciation Breakfast and met with the Alabama Congressional delegation.
“It was very educational,” Page said. “It was an honor to meet with them.”
ACRE is one of the most recognized and well-respected political action committees in Washington, D.C. It serves as the grassroots political action committee of the NRECA and represents the interests of the nation’s nearly 1,000 not-for-profit electric cooperative systems and their 37 million consumers by supporting federal and state candidates who will speak for and protect their interests.
