ANDALUSIA, ALA. — As Tropical Storm Fay makes its way across northwest Florida toward Alabama, PowerSouth Energy Cooperative prepares for possible heavy rainfall from the storm.
With the amount of rainfall currently projected to be moderate to heavy locally, PowerSouth is monitoring Gantt and Point A lake levels. PowerSouth controls the operation of the dams for Gantt and Point A lakes on the Conecuh River near Gantt, Ala., which are subject to government-mandated water levels.
“Currently, the lake levels are at normal pool levels,” said Mark Ingram, PowerSouth Communication Manager. “As a precaution to the significant amount of rain predicted for the area, PowerSouth will begin a controlled release at both dams. We have begun lowering the water level to one foot below maximum pool on both Gantt and Point A Lakes.”
It may be necessary to lower the lakes more if rain exceeds current expectations.
PowerSouth will continue to monitor rainfall amounts from Fay to stay ahead of the volume of water that will flow into each lake.
“Residents are reminded to stay abreast of the storm’s development and take necessary safety precautions. Low-lying areas should be avoided,” said Ingram. “Also, avoid downed power lines and contact your local electric provider in the event of a power outage.”
