ANDALUSIA, ALA. – Representatives from PowerSouth will attend the first annual meeting of the National Renewable Cooperative Organization (NRCO) Nov. 14, 2008, in Indianapolis.
PowerSouth is one of the founding members of NRCO, a not-for-profit cooperative formed to promote and facilitate the development of renewable energy resources for America’s electric cooperatives.
The organization’s 24 members serve more than 23 million consumers, including 800,000 in PowerSouth’s service territory, in 36 states. Each NRCO member holds a seat on the board.
“NRCO allows PowerSouth to find and participate in renewable energy opportunities that are not available in the Southeast,” said Gary Smith, PowerSouth President and CEO.
In true cooperative spirit, NRCO’s members pool resources and expertise and, in doing so, take advantage of economies of scale to expand the use of valuable resources for power generation.
This benefit supports PowerSouth’s mission of providing competitively priced power.
PowerSouth continues to investigate sources of renewable energy and remains abreast of future technologies that may play a role in its overall power supply strategy. Through its participation in NRCO, PowerSouth hopes to expand participation in renewable projects beyond the Southeast.
“As a utility, diversity of supply is very important,” Smith said. “If legislation, weather or mechanical problems impact one resource, PowerSouth must be able to adapt quickly and continue to meet our members’ needs.”
To qualify for NRCO membership, entities must be generation and transmission cooperatives, unaffiliated distribution cooperatives or partial requirements cooperatives that have the legal right to participate in wholesale electric markets.
“This is a great way to extend co-op participation into new alternative energy markets,” said Ron Harper, Basin Electric Power Cooperative CEO and General Manager. “Some electric co-ops may choose to participate in NRCO renewable projects as partial fulfillment of renewable portfolio standards set by the sates in which they serve. The goal of NRCO is to provide diversified alternative energy resource opportunities to electric co-ops nationwide.”
