PowerSouth prepares for hurricane season
ANDALUSIA, ALA. – Hurricane season begins June 1, and as always, safety is PowerSouth’s number one priority. A company-wide Emergency Response Plan thoroughly details preparation and restoration guidelines for predictable natural disasters.
“Every employee involved in emergency response knows their role and executes the plan accordingly,” said PowerSouth Vice President of Power Delivery Larry Avery. “We hold annual drills to ensure things operate as smoothly and effectively as possible.”
“While employee safety is critical, essential operating personnel are expected to use every effort to report for work during inclement weather and declared emergencies in order for PowerSouth to continue providing reliable power to our members,” Avery said.
Forecasters are predicting an above-average hurricane season, with communities along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts facing a 69 percent risk of being hit with a major storm in the coming months.
Eight hurricanes and 15 named tropical storms are likely to form in the Atlantic basin during the 2010 hurricane season, which begins June 1 and extends through Nov. 30. Four of the storms are expected to develop into major hurricanes with sustained winds of 111 mph or greater.
To allow residents of coastal areas more time to make preparations and get to safe shelters, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) will issue watches and warnings for tropical storms and hurricanes 12 hours earlier than in previous years. According to the National Hurricane Center, advancements in track forecasts have made this extra lead time possible.
