ANDALUSIA, ALA. – Opp High School (OHS) students Hillarie Davis and Cameron White have been selected as PowerSouth’s 2010 Youth Tour winner and runner-up, respectively.
In March, the students will join hundreds of other Youth Tour winners from across Alabama in the state capital to learn more about government, the legislative process and the rural electrification program.
As the OHS Youth Tour winner, Davis will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., in June to participate in the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s (NRECA) Youth Tour to visit the nation’s capital and meet with government leaders, along with thousands of other high school students from around the country.
The top 10 students from AHS joined area Youth Tour Program participants at Point A Lodge on Feb. 16 to learn more about PowerSouth and the electric industry, while interacting with their peers.
Davis and White were chosen based on their performance on written essays, written tests and an interview competition at PowerSouth’s headquarters in Andalusia.
Davis, daughter of Joe and Stacey Nawlin, was selected as the OHS winner. She has demonstrated leadership through her participation in the Senior Beta Club and Diamond Dolls, and was selected a member of the all A’s Honor Roll. She was chosen Voice of Democracy Contest Winner. She is a member of the Pep Club, Mu Alpha Theta and OHS Volleyball Team.
White, son of Patrick and Michelle Kilgore, was selected as the OHS runner-up. He has shown leadership through his role as a worship leader for his church youth group. He was selected a member of the all A’s honor roll. He also is a member of the OHS basketball team, Peer Helpers, Beta Club and Mu Alpha Theta.
Katherine Williams, Sydney Jones and Kelli Norris were selected as alternates.
PowerSouth has participated in the Youth Tour program for more than 20 years, sponsoring students from Andalusia, Elba, Opp and Pike County high schools.
The Electric Cooperative Youth Tour has brought high school students to Washington, D.C., every June since the late 1950s, and more than 40,000 students from across America have participated in this unique program.
