ANDALUSIA, ALA. – The employees at PowerSouth’s Central Generation reached a three-year safety milestone June 27, logging 372,777 man-hours with no lost-time accidents

Some 131,955 safe hours were worked in last year alone — many of them around high-voltage electricity, high pressure generators and large equipment.

“The power industry can be a dangerous industry,” said Marc Kyzar, Central Generation Operation and Maintenance Technical Coordinator. “But our employees recognize that and strive to work safely to minimize the dangers. At the end of the day, we all want to go home healthy and happy.”

Safety is PowerSouth’s number one corporate value, and Central Generation’s safety achievements prove that they regard it as a top priority.

“It’s evident by the safety record here at Central Generation that each of you come to work and make the right choices for you and your fellow co-workers,” said Damon Morgan, PowerSouth Vice President of Power Supply at a celebratory luncheon on August 11. “Working safely is a requirement here at the plant, and management appreciates your dedication.”

During the luncheon, plant employees were presented with an award for their safe working habits.

“It is with great pride that I accept this safety award on behalf of each of you at Central Generation,” said Plant Manager John Tisdale. “All of you do a great job of putting safety first each and every day.”

As a company, PowerSouth boasts an impressive safety record. So far in 2009, PowerSouth’s Recordable Incident rate is 1.84, compared to a national average of 3.6, and its Days Away, Restricted or Transferred (DART) rate is 0.0, compared to a national average of 1.8.

“Our employees work together to carry out our safety program,” said PowerSouth Safety Supervisor Buddy Manring. “Our good safety record is only possible through their combined efforts and dedication to working safely.”
