ANDALUSIA, ALA.– Last week, hundreds of Youth Tour winners from across Alabama gathered in the state capitol to learn more about government, the legislative process and the rural electrification program.
Among them were these eight students (listed as winner and runner-up from each school, respectively): Susannah Watson and Stephen Caton, Jr, from Andalusia High School; Aaliyah Horstead and KeiAna Edwards from Elba High School; Magen Foley and Heath Barton from Opp High School; and Azriel Larkin and Shanterrica Shipman from Pike County High School.
The students were selected to represent PowerSouth based on their performance in three areas of competition — a written essay, a test about cooperatives and an interview at PowerSouth’s headquarters in Andalusia. As high school juniors, these students show exemplary leadership through programs such as the Student Government Association (SGA), Mu Alpha Theta, Key Club, Peer Helpers, National Honor Society, varsity athletics, and Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA).
As Youth Tour winners, Watson, Horstead, Foley and Larkin will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., in June to participate in the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s (NRECA) Youth Tour. There, they will visit the nation’s capitol and meet with government leaders, while networking with thousands of other high school students from around the country.
The Electric Cooperative Youth Tour has brought high school students to Washington, D.C., every June since the late 1950s, and more than 40,000 students from across America have participated in this unique program.
