ANDALUSIA, ALA. – Community leaders and economic development professionals from across south Alabama attended a seminar April 28 hosted by PowerSouth Energy Cooperative and eight of its distribution members.

Del Boyette of Boyette Strategic Advisors moderated the seminar at Troy University’s Dothan campus. Seminar attendees included mayors, councilmen, city planners and economic development personnel from communities across central and south Alabama.

“The last several months have been hard on many areas of south Alabama, and we’ve recognized that we all have to work together to attract economic development prospects,” said James Grimes, Elba, Ala., Mayor and PowerSouth Board Member. “Elba has welcomed new industry despite economic challenges, and learning how to continue attracting prospective businesses is what development is about.”

The municipalities of Elba, Andalusia, Opp and Brundidge, Ala., sponsored the seminar, as well as Covington Electric Cooperative, headquartered in Andalusia, Ala., Pea River Electric Cooperative of Ozark, Ala., South Alabama Electric Cooperative of Troy, Ala., and Wiregrass Electric Cooperative, of Hartford, Ala. All eight sponsor groups are distribution members of PowerSouth Energy Cooperative.

“Economic development within our region continues to be highly competitive,” said Taylor Williams, PowerSouth Economic Development Representative. “Affected communities within the PowerSouth service area have to make sure at the end of the day they are involved in the process of competing for as many opportunities for growth as possible. This seminar is aimed at helping develop strategies that meet that goal.”

PowerSouth plays a vital role in the economic development process within Alabama. Benefits offered to communities of the PowerSouth service area include product development, workforce and leadership training, industry cluster analysis, marketing and project assistance and the generation of development prospects. PowerSouth’s Economic Development team is directed by Vice President of Business Development Seth Hammett, and includes Williams, Lee Lawson and Juliet Milam as Economic Development Representatives.
