LEROY, ALA.– PowerSouth employees at Lowman Power Plant proved their awareness and dedication to safety by completing a second full year without a lost-time injury on July 13, which means no employee missed work due to an injury suffered on the job.

Achieving two years with no lost-time accidents illustrates the enormous degree of safety dedication shown daily. This attention to safety is imperative due to the nature of the work and the hazards the employees face, both in their environment and with regard to equipment.

“This award is a testament to your dedication to safety,” said David Powell, Lowman Plant Manager. “I commend everyone for reaching this significant milestone. I encourage all employees to think safety first before any job is undertaken here at the plant.”

The Lowman Plant’s safety team conducts monthly safety meetings for every employee, performs routine daily walk-throughs to ensure a safe work environment, and ensures each employee is following safety guidelines and procedures.

According to Powell, the plant employees with longer service to the company also act as mentors for the younger employees. “A safety program is important for one reason, and that is to protect each person's health,” he said. “It's that simple.”

Gary Smith, PowerSouth President and CEO, commended the plant’s 193 employees on the 737,091 man-hours worked without a lost time accident during a safety luncheon Aug. 11.

“The Lowman Power Plant is a great asset for PowerSouth in delivering the power needed for our 20 member systems, and each of you make the plant a reliable source of generation in our power supply plan,” said Smith. “Safety is our number one corporate value, and my goal is to make sure you get home the same way you got to work. We do that through safety education and training. You work in a very dangerous environment, and your number one focus should be safety for you and for your coworkers. I challenge you to finish the year without a lost-time accident. Safety is vital.”

The Charles R. Lowman Power Plant serves as one of PowerSouth’s primary generating sources. With its three coal-fired generating units, Plant Lowman has a generating capacity of 556 megawatts.
