After 19 months of construction, PowerSouth’s board, staff and special guests dedicated new natural gas-fired generation Units 4 and 5 at PowerSouth’s McIntosh Power Plant on April 22.

The formal dedication celebrated that the new units were completed ahead of schedule and $52 million under budget, making the total invested cost for the units below $330 per kilowatt.  More importantly, the project was completed safely, with no lost-time accidents during construction.

“The McIntosh Plant incorporates state-of-the-art technology and the combined efforts of a number of people and organizations,” said Ronald Jones, CHELCO Board President and Chairman of the PowerSouth Board of Trustees. “In addition, this facility is in line with PowerSouth’s commitment to maintain environmental integrity while serving its members affordable electricity.”

PowerSouth began formal commercial operations of the natural-gas fired Units 4 and 5 in January of this year. The two Siemens SCT6-5000F combustion turbines and generators add an additional 448 megawatts of generation capacity to PowerSouth’s owned generation facilities – bringing the company’s total generation capacity to more than 2,170 megawatts.

“Reliable power sold at reasonable rates was what we promised almost 70 years ago when PowerSouth was formed,” said Gary Smith, PowerSouth President and CEO. “A lot has happened in 70 years – we’ve acquired ownership in or built 27 generation units, including these two today, but our mission remains the same – to provide reliable wholesale power at a competitive price.”

At the dedication, Smith and Jones unveiled a monument commemorating the new units and their contribution to PowerSouth’s power supply plan.

“We’ve developed a power supply plan that uses generation sources from purchased power, hydro, biomass, wind, nuclear, coal and natural gas like the two units we’re dedicating today,” said Gary Harrison, President and CEO of Dixie EC and PowerSouth Vice Chairman. “Such a diverse fuel mix gives tremendous flexibility. We will take the steps necessary to continue to provide long-term power supplies for the PowerSouth service territory for years to come.”
