ANDALUSIA, ALA. – Pike County High School (PCHS) students Martinez Larkin and Stetson McCain have been selected as PowerSouth’s 2009 Youth Tour winner and runner-up, respectively.
In March, the students will join hundreds of other Youth Tour winners from across Alabama in the state capital to learn more about government, the legislative process and the rural electrification program.
As the PCHS Youth Tour winner, Larkin will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., in June to participate in the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s (NRECA) Youth Tour to visit the nation’s capital and meet with government leaders, along with thousands of other high school students from around the country.
The top 10 students from PCHS joined area Youth Tour Program participants at Point A Lodge on Feb. 17 to learn more about PowerSouth and the electric industry, while interacting with their peers.
Larkin and McCain were chosen based on their performance on written essays, written tests and an interview competition at PowerSouth’s headquarters in Andalusia.
Larkin, son of Shawin and Gynene Terry, leads a young basketball team and is actively involved in student government. He plays baseball and is a member of SPIRIT, Omega Lambda Lambda, FBLA and the Business and Finance Academy.
McCain, son of James Byrd and Bobbi McCain, is a member of the Business and Finance Academy and FBLA. He received the Science Award, English 10 Award and Accounting Principles Award, and he marched Charlie Company during drills and ceremonies as a Cadet Corporal with the JROTC program at PCHS.
Diamond Cottrell, Shakayla Knox and Abraxis Sawyer were selected as alternates.
PowerSouth has participated in the Youth Tour program for more than 20 years, sponsoring students from Andalusia, Elba, Opp and Pike County high schools.
The Electric Cooperative Youth Tour has brought high school students to Washington, D.C., every June since the late 1950s, and more than 40,000 students from across America have participated in this unique program.
